Subject: Petition & Playing with the Guys
Message-ID:
Hi,
Well, I generally lurk on this list, and already sent my info directly to
Carolyn Simon. But, in a goofball move, lost her direct address. Would
someone please either post it here, again, or send it directly to me?
I administer and play in an Adult League that is affiliated with
the coach of my women's team & at our home ice. I would be happy to
distribute info on the petition to the league, some of the guys will
probably even respond, but expect the direct address would be better than a
deluge to the list.
Anyhow, there are 6 women playing with the hundred men (on 4 of the
teams, 2 have women Cs, 2 As), all of us play on one or the other of the 2
women's teams in the DC area.
It's really been quite an experience for all of us - ranging from
working hard novices to solid intermediate players. Definitely a different
type of game, the league is mixed level (1st year of existence) so each
team has some total novices, some *A* players - guys that played College,
Juniors, &/or Minor pros, with the bulk just solid intermediate. One thing
we have really noticed is that the women are much more likely to be "in the
right place" & use their skill, pass, while the lesser skilled guys tend to
get sucked out of position, or never get there or pass. The leading players
have been encouraging & supportive to the women, with lots of comments
about even if some of us are a bit slower, we keep trying & do the right
thing, & at least we really can pass, catch & stay open. There has really
been no problem with the guys trying to beat on the women - perhaps a minor
tease, dare at first but that has long since gone.
The games are faster than we would normally play, due to the
presence of the advanced players, but it makes us all (both genders) strive
hard to keep up. And play a bit more physical, not that it's cheap hits,
just the speed & plenty of contact happening all the time. And, yes there
have been some fights - as team capt it's been a challenge getting my guys
to grab someone going over the boards, or pulling a guy out of a pile-up -
but there really aren't cheap shots from the solid players. OTOH what the
refs, and the players have noticed is that the novice (less-skilled) guys
definitely start swinging sticks, slashing, tripping & lots of accidental
cross-checks - especially to the head - maybe out of frustration at not
being able to make a play, or just thinking this is the tough thing to do.
Who knows. It is something that has started most of the altercations in the
league - the better players, or anyone, eventually get tired of the
accidental, annoying & eventually painful hits. But, all have commented
that you don't see this with the women, certainly not to the same extent -
maybe because we are all coming from a more formally coached background.
The only other difference in play that has been chatted in the
locker rooms is that when some of the women who don't normally play with
guys play pick-up, their style becomes very physical. Almost an overkill,
as if they have to go for some extra hits - frequently cheap shots - like
they think this is what playing with the guys is about. It's kind of
strange, especially when it is happening with very highly skilled women
players. I wonder if this is some idea held in general - that playing with
the men means pushing it out of bounds more? My friends have chatted this,
often in surprise at some being butt-ended, or excessive digging on people
down at the boards, etc., asking if this is how the women's game is, or why
are *those girls* doing that when they're such good skaters. Not saying
there aren't some jerks on both sides out there - ' cause yes, I still
remember the 1st *fist* in the chest & almost slashing heck out of the guy
(he did offer to let me hit him in the crotch, as payback, realizing he
really had hurt me, & was out of line - No, I didn't accept the offer)
Just some thoughts- observation - any comments? what's it like for
the rest of you? Sorry to seem like I'm babbling - it's the hockey
addiction thing.
