Hi all!

I just moved to the Washington, D.C. area, and am looking for a B/C
level team to play with. I live in Rosslyn, VA, so I'd prefer to play
at a rink near northern Virginia. Does anyone know of any womens or
adult leagues, or pick-up hockey times...?

My son is a goalie, and I've taken him to many goalie camps, and
watched his interaction with the other goalies, and I have come to a
conclusion - goalies are born, not made! It's a position that takes a
lot of mental toughness and resliancy.

If you think you'd like to try it - do it! You'll either be hooked or
you'll hate it. I think if you're even considering playing the
position, it must be in your blood.

What you need to do it will come as you learn, just like every other
position on the ice! I've read some biographies on goalies, and one
of the more famous ones (I'll remember his name as soon as I hit
"send") said that he and his wife had done a reaction demo at a
science museum, and her reaction time was actually faster than his!

     Good luck and have fun,
     Jan.

Howdy... :)

I have been looking for some information on what qualities are most
important to play each position - It is a seemingly simple request, yet I
can't seem to find it spelled out anywhere online...

Furthermore, women's hockey draws on different strengths than men's
because of higher body fat percentage for women, less muscle mass,
greater flexibility, etc.. so I would imagine that some of the answers
might be different, both for those playing coed and all-female hockey...

I'd be interested in hearing members of this list's opinions on how they
would determine which position a particular person should play -- how you
or your wife/girlfriend/etc. was able to find a niche...

Why do I ask? Well, I play D currently. I am not quick enough to be a
forward - that I can tell. But I was wondering what it takes to play
goal... My team currently doesn't have a goalie, and I was thinking of
asking my coach to consider training me... But along with the "late
starter" type thread, I am wondering if this is a silly idea - after all,
having an inexperienced goalie would put our team at a real
disadvantage... But how would one become experienced in the first place! ;)

Why do I think I might be able to play goal? 2 reasons:
1) My current profession deals with visual search - looking for "target"
items among "distractors" - so by default, I have been highly trained in
picking out items in my visual field... both stationary and
moving...sometimes moving quickly... so perhaps I could track a moving puck?
2) My first hobby as child was dance. I was a dancer for 15 years, was a
member of several performing divisions, etc... So I have agility,
flexibility, and strong legs.

Why am I nervous about asking my coach?
1) I am only 5'3. Hardly imposing.
2) My team doesn't want swiss cheese until I become practiced...and I
wonder how long it would take to be decent.
3) I am shy about suggesting that I could be such an important player...
4) Goalie equipment is expensive...so it would be quite a committment
without knowing if I'd be good at it (of course, borrowing equipment at
first is an option)...

What do you all think? How did you find your niche in your team? Did any
of you try several positions before settling into your current one, or
did the coach just assign you to something?

Thanks for your help!
Kari

Hi Kim!

I know ther are others on this list that will direct you to the right
place as there is quite a bit of hockey out in the area. I just wanted
to mention that I am sure you are at least B level with your experience -
don't underestimate yourself :)

Good to see you on the list! And good luck out there.

But his personality is what makes him a goalie; not his size. He joined
hockey as a Mite, skated two weeks, then told the coach he would like to
try goalie and has never looked back. Other, more talented kids have
come and gone as goalies, but he ends up being the best one because he
sticks it out. He can handle losing, getting shot at constantly,
parents yelling at him from the sidelines, bad defense, whatever comes
his way (in fact, he will almost never even admit that he's upset!). A
goalie has to like being on a team, like being around other people, but
have a certain reserve in his/her personality that makes him/her a bit
of a lone pup. Being made out of mental Kevlar is essential, as is
being a little strange! About 6 months after he started playing, we
were watching Patrick Roy (his hero), and the announcer mentioned that
Roy has a ritual of talking to the goal posts. I pointed that out to
Alex and he said, "of course! I talk to my gloves when I'm out there.
Haven't you noticed?" I had wondered what he was doing when he stuck
his catcher and blocker out in front of him during the pauses! That
about sums up a goalie's personality.

If you have the personality, go for it!

C.L.

USA Hockey will be instituting a women's B team for prospects after the
Olympics to ensure a good showing in Salt Lake.

BTW, is Meaghan Sittler related to Darryl Sittler?

Okay, I am in the process of looking at purchasing my own goalie equipment.
There is a lot of different brands out there and a wide selection for men and
a not so wide selection for women.

I am a 5'6" female that weighs between 155 - 160 pounds. My question are as
follows:

AND PLEASE RESPOND TO ME PRIVATELY SO AS NOT TO CLUTTER UP THE LIST!!!!!

What manufacturer do you buy your equipment from and why?

What manufacturer would you absolutely NOT buy from and why?

If you are currently using women's equipment, did you use men's equipment
before and how do you think it compares?

Any useful hints about what to look for and how things should feel, etc. would
be greatly appreciated. As you know, this is probably the most expensive
position to play on a team and in this case, all the information I can get
(especially experienced information) is a good thing!

Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond.

a lot of people have been commenting on me saying I won't play in college. I
probably won't, there's no way I or my family can pay for an out of state

women's hockey. another tihng is I probably won't be able to afford
equipment, I've needed a new pair of kneepads since May, and still don't have
any. another tihng is I haven't played ice hockey, I think I'd rather play
roller hockey.

Anyways, for some reason I'm starting to like hockey less and less. I'm
tired of just reading about and watching it on T.V. or at the ice rink 40
miles away. my hockey equipment stuff is collecting dust in my closet, I
haven't used it since June. and probably won't for awhile. Colorado's just
not the state to live in if you like hockey.

I've seen everybody else do this so I'll do it too.

Lisa,
Glad to hear about the idea of the 'B' team. We have an 11-year-old
prospect in our family! She was transfixed by the hockey at the Festival
and fantasized about being 'called up'.
Yes, Darryl Sittler is Meaghan's Dad. He was at all the games we saw at
the Festival in Lake Placid playing the role of proud Dad as opposed to
hockey hero.

Isn't Meaghan Sittler, Darryl's sister? I know he has a daughter who plays
hockey, I believe on a Buffalo team... I think Meaghan played for team USA.
