Anyone know more about it? -- or how to get in touch with these men to

The two men are Don Wilson and Ed Saunders.

A few years ago, there were rumors that a few college coaches (ECAC Div.
1) were also trying to organize a women's pro league. Things never worked
out, I think because of personal conflicts and lack of support from other
hockey officials, the press, the public, etc. As much as I would like to
see a women's pro league, I'm not sure there is enough support now either.
Hopefully, in a few years, there will be more support. Of course, that
depends alot upon how the Olympics go and upon the success of the WNBA. I
also think that the quality of college hockey needs to improve and that
women's hockey needs to be an NCAA-sanctioned sport, which means that
there need to be more teams.

I have been searching for two days now for a young womens
hockey program in eastern Mass. I was wondering if any of you
folks on this list know of any. My daughter played for Haverhill youth
hockey last year. She loves hockey ( She will be the 3rd generation too)
and she doesn't want to miss a season. Why don't I keep here in
Haverhill?
The Haverhill program is in deep financial trouble. They are trying to
balance
thier books on the backs of the members in good standing. Hockey is
expensive enough as it is and I don't feel as if we have to spend an
extra
$200/yr to bail out poor collection practices!!

Jen - the women's games will be broadcast (probably on tape delay) over CBS
in the states. If CBS goes by its usual hockey coverage, they'll show
highlights of the non-medal games for both sexes, the men's medal round in
its entirety, and *probably* show the women's gold medal game.

Unfortunately, women's hockey will be competing for air time with another
so-called "women's sport" - figure skating. I would also bet on lots of
drippy profiles of players who have suffered from any hardship greater than a
sprained toe (Vicky Sunohara's substance abuse problems and Cammi Granato's
brother's illness should get the full blown treatment, poor things), and lots
of talk about "delicate girls playing such a rough sport."

God willing, the CBC will have better coverage. Does anyone have any details
(like Andria????)?

Hi, Lisa.

I don't want to be a pain in the butt, but I think we're all working to
help ALL women's sports gain respect. By taking this attitude toward
figure skating -- or any other sport -- we really undermine women's
respect in all sports.

I know that figure skating has a bad reputation because of the focus on
superficial beauty, eating disorders, unsports-woman-like conduct, etc.
But the fact remains that these women are athletes: they train hard, they
take their sport seriously, they're dedicated. Just like women hockey
players. And women volleyball players .... and women runners .... and
women softball players .....

I agree that it's unfortunate that women's ice hockey may not get the
coverage it deserves. I would love it if all of the women's sports got
the fanfare coverage that figure skating does. I expect that my favorite
sport (triathlon) won't get the converage I think it deserves at the
Sydney games either. But we should be celebrating the new additions of
these sports to the Olympics -- and supporting all women's sports so the
world will realize that women can play any sport they want to.

Ranting with a smile,

I may be wrong, but I don't think that Lisa meant this as a bash to
women's figure skating. I think what she was probably trying to say is
that it is the women's sport that will be shown will be the one that the
media and public see as the most "appropriate" womens sport--the one that
is most accepted for women to participate in, and doesn't pose a threat to
the traditional "masculine" sports.

Despite the fact that there has been an attempt to show more womens
sports, those of us involved in womens hockey realize the sad truth that
there is more resistance to our sport than people are willing to openly
admit, and that the media will cater to the public and show the
"traditional" female sport, hence only reinforcing that this is *the*
sport for female athletes, and any young girl thinking about strapping on
the skates also needs to put on a skirt.

I don't think anyone here undermines the athleticism of figure
skaters...lord knows I certainly couldn't do a tripple toe loops...but I
think we do resent the fact that our options are presented as limmited
in the sports world.

Oops...didn't mean to make that so long!

They did very well ... much better than I could ever do if I

I also forgot to mention in my last message that the 8 goal mercy

During the Summer games, the media was fair to gymnastics AND basketball,
baseball, and showed to a lesser extent, volleyball, beach volleyball (now
there's a sport!) etc. Why would we expect less during the winter. I have
always thought that air time was meted out on patriotic lines. When did
they ever show archery? When a young American boy got the gold, and never
before. There is no use in jumping the gun. In the meantime, let the
network (whoever is broadcasting the games) know what you want to see.
Apparently they consider one letter or e-mail the tip of the iceberg. One
hundred letters would be an absolute landslide!

Thanks, Shannon - that's *exactly* what I meant. Gymnastics and ice skating
are grueling, and the training often verges on child abuse, but they *look*
graceful and feminine, and at least in figure skating, makeup, costume and
hairstyle are part of the judging (under "artistic impression"). Women
actually sweat when they play hockey, and it isn't graceful and dainty. I
therefore expect the figure skaters to get a lot more air time than the
hockey team.

I think one of the things that factors in here too, is Hockey as a sport
has not caught on to the same level as figure skating or football or
basketball.
It may be regionalized. As a parent of a female hockey player and as a
2nd
generation player myself I think that is a terrible shame. To bad FOX
wasn't
doing the Olympics I think they would do a better job with it, save that

Keep in mind that whether or not figure skating is considered more
"appropriate" for women or not, the coverage it gets is also based on
sponsors. They know that this is what the public wants to see and
therefore that's the sport that they are going to sponsor (want to get the
consumer dollars, you know). Maybe this will change over time, but
figure skating has been the top draw of the winter olympics for a long
time and it will take some time to dethrone them.

Keep supporting women's hockey and be patient.

the skates also needs to put on a skirt.

I don't think anyone here undermines the athleticism of figure
skaters...lord knows I certainly couldn't do a tripple toe loops...but I
think we do resent the fact that our options are presented as limmited

Does anyone know about the schedule of exhibition games for Team
USA and Team Canada? I heard they would be facing off against each
other in the Maritimes, Toronto and Boston in early November. Does
anyone have any definate dates?
