Where my husband used to live in Ottawa the Loblaw's Grocery Store (home of
the famous President's Choice product line) had a noon-time bar b que each
Saturday outside their store. Various community groups (ie. boy scouts and
softball teams) hosted the event. What was great about this was that the
store provided the large grill necessary, the large coolers for drinks, and
no doubt offered a discounted price for all necessary food supplies from
hot dogs to condiments to napkins. I would highly recommend this as a fun
and hassle free way to raise some money. In any dealings I have heard
nothing but good things about Loblaws. I only wish Loblaws would open some
stores here in Maryland - I could really go for some President's Choice
Cheddar Smokies right now :)

I don't know if this will work in your area. We have gone to the IHL and
NHL to get discount tickets (minimum 75). They sell them to us for 25%
off(regular ticket price) and we sell them for 10% off. So we make 15% on
every ticket we sell. We made $350 at one event last year.
Also the IHL and NHL might sell you a mini season package at 15% off, and
you can raffle the package off. We are trying that this year, we hope to
make $800, for the team.

On the two girls/women's teams I've been part of the coaching staff for,
I've found that in addition to being part of the staff, I'm also the one
who checks to make sure that the players are "decent" (no bras or panties
showing) before my male counterpart enters the room.
Likewise, after games, the male coach enters immediately with the team.
Players strip off "outer" gear -- jersey, shoulder pads -- and listen to
the coach. When he leaves, I can stay if I'm needed or have more to say,
and the players dress.
By having me on the staff, I think it's eased a lot of potential
problems -- particularly coming from the team. These players were first
in high school, and more lately in college (with a very attractive male
coach, in their opinions). Even though a lot of them have been in locker
rooms for eons, they still don't want to show a man -- even their coach
-- what goes on underneath.

I recently became interested in collecting women's hockey cards. I know a
lot more about women's hockey and the players than I do about card
collecting. I contacted several card shops where I live in Central NY, but I
didn't find anyone who knew about women's cards and no one who was very
interested in helping me. I've been reading Women's Hockey Magazine and
would like to find the '94 Classic Women of Hockey card set. At this point,
I'm interested in any women's cards. Also, where can I get the Upper Deck
card set due out this fall featuring the top Team Canada and (hopefully) Team
USA players? I'm told one can find cards through the Internet, but I don't
have much experience with or knowledge about using it yet except to look up
specific web sites. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One place you could look would be Ralph Slate's card site. I don't know if
he has any Women's Hockey cards specifically, but it's a place to start.
I haven't been there in awhile, I know he's updating it at the moment.

Our senior team in Cowichan Valley has done "garbage pickup duty" for the
local municpality (county) and the provincial highways maintenance companies
over the past couple of years. This a long day of hard work but with a
whole team's participation and good organization you can make good money.
We have raised $400, $800 and $500 on three different routes.
Not the most pleasant work but a good fundraiser and definately good
community service.
