I really didn't mean that as a criticism - it is really something I've
wondered about for a while, precisely because of what you mention:
boys teams are called boys teams! "Men" tends to mean college or
     adult.

I am a woman and when a tournament is called a women's hockey
tournament, I think it's something that my team may be interested in -
only to find that 9 times out of 10, it's really a girl's tournament.
So I am really interested in why this has come to be.

I think your program and your tournaments are wonderful opportunities
for girls, and the support you've given girls' hockey is commendable.
Keep up the good work, and don't worry about the small stuff.

I really, truly, was just asking about something that seems odd to me!

Good question Jan.

It seems no matter what we call it someone beats us up over the girls vs
womens issue. It really gets annoying after a while because here we are -
two people putting together a tournament with 63 teams for girls to get
exposure to college and prep school coaches - and we have to start
worrying about calling it "girls or young womens". Believe me we have had
complaints from both sides.

Maybe someone can clarify what it should be called. I'd be happy to
change it to girls if that woud be more PC. I just don't want to take
away from the purpose of the tournament which is to allow young women to
advance their educational opportunities by having a place to showcase
their athletic talent before many college coaches at one venue.

We have had many great success stories from our organization and the
tournament. Only one player from our organization in our 11 years has not
gone on to college.

I would be inclined to call it girls because young men are called boys -
and that doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I'm sorry if it seems like I taking off on this but after the number of
hours I have been putting into it lately to make sure it runs well I just
don't need to have to worry about what to call it. Again, we are two
people doing this - not making a dime for our time - our reward is
knowing that when it's over another year was successful and a bunch of
kids got some great exposure. It's our way of giving something back.

Jan:

I appreciate what your saying. We have had a lot of responses this year
thinking we have a women's tournament. It's unfortunate that there are
not more out there. I know this area (the Northeast) could use a few. I
don't think there is even a womens team in Connecticut. Maybe, as some of
our players get older and more get out of school there will be enough
women in the area to start a few teams. Until then they have to play on
mixed teams, which isn't bad except maybe you lose some of the closeness
one might form on an all womens team?

I didn't mean to imply that you were being critical. It is difficult to
know what to call it though. Some people get mad if you call it "girls"
but it can be confusing if you call it womens. So we tried to be
somewhere in between.

Thanks

Elmer

I have to agree. I see nothing wrong with asking directions on how to
get to a competition.

BTW if anyone else needs directions I have Rand McNally (Street Finder)
maps of North America on CD-ROM that will locate by street address. I
can then fax or e-mail the directions.

Elmer,

Back in the '70s when I worked for WomenSports Magazine, I heard all of
the same complaints. I suggest you continue doing what you think is
right and 'damn the torpedoes!'

Otherwise, you might have to simply call it 'Female Human Hockey
Tournament' so as not to get caught up in the AGE problems.

Good Luck,

Gary King

Graduation is around the corner, and it's time to start looking for a job.
I have two resumes: telecommunications and HOCKEY. I'll make more money
in telecom, but I love hockey. I've done a lot of work building and
promoting my college club team. I also thoroughly enjoyed the work I did
for the midget girls tournament. I have several ideas of places to send
my hockey resume, but I'm sure I havn't covered everything. If anyone out
there has any ideas or contact names and addresses, please let me know.

Please respond directly to me rather than the mailing list - I don't think
everyone wants to get this info (and I don't want too much competition;-).

Thanks.

Jan: I sure don't know!!! Where I am at, it seems politicaly incorrect
to even ask for ice for the female gender! I am not deterred. I do
know that the girls I coach do not want to be called anything else
(unless the term "ladies" is used with obvious affection). USA Hockey
classifies females as follows:

Girls 19 or Under (Midget)
Girls 15 or Under (PeeWee)
Girls 12 or Under (Squirt)
Women (any age) A and B

There are no other classifications for the Girls/Women Section.

Elmer: I missed the exchanges in the course of reading my mail. I am
here in Alaska, and up here, we think of the Northeast as the hotbed of
Girls/Women's Hockey. 60+ teams! Wow! Keep up the great effort.
