directions to Baker Rink, Princeton:

I don't know where I80 is, but take 206 into Princeton. You'll come to a 3
road intersection. If you're travelling 206 south, NASSAU STREET is on the
left. From 206 north, it is on the right. Take Nassau for about two
blocks, and on the right, take University Place all the way down, and
you'll hit ALEXANDER ROAD. Take a left and drive down to the next traffic
light, and make a left on FACULTY ROAD. Go down, and pass the train
tracks, and take the first left. At the next left, there's a security
booth, and you can ask them where Baker rink is. But I'll give you the
rest of the directions anyway. Make a left at the security booth, and
drive to the end of the parking lot. Take the right that leads up the hill
and drive down a little, and BAKER RINK will be on your right.

Jan: Please don't forget that having your head down is more a sure way
to get injured than it is to avoid injury. This has always been a
coaching challenge for me. This months issue of American Hockey
Magazine speaks at length on this issue. Even inadvertant collisions
have the potential for injury! Last year 10 USA Hockey registered
players recieved neck or spinal injuries as a resul to colliding into
the boards behind the net with thier heads down! There was no body
contact involved. Also, these injuries occured in the players offensive
zone. i.e. "crashing the net"

Hi there. I had a few questions about the Clarkson Edge tournament. Is
this the first time that they are hosting atournament for girls? Is the
Clarkson Edge a women's team? Is there alot of support for women's
hockey in NY? I'm writing a book about women's hockey and am looking
for information about US hockey: how long various women's teams have
been playing in different parts of the country, the type of support they
receive, what the interest level is of the girls/women, various
tournaments available to girls'/women's teams, etc. Your tournament
sounds great!! Thanks for your help.

>>> "Abigail S. Clabough"

Yesterday, November 24, The Clarkson Edge hosted a tournament for
four
midget girls teams. The purpose of this tournament was to
introduce the girls to Clarkson (thereby earning the support of
administration), to increase awareness of women's hockey, and to let
the
girls have fun.

Our local radio station promoted "Women's Hockey Weekend" which
mentioned
St. Lawrence's two home games as well as our tournament.

The results of the tournament are as follows:

Game 1:
National Capitals (Ontario) 3 - Canton-Potsdam Silver Blades 0

Game 2:
Binghamton Jr. Rangers 1 - Kingston Kodiaks 5

Game 3:
Kingston Kodiaks 2 - National Capitals 2

Game 4:
Canton-Potsdam Silver Blades 3 - Binghamton Jr. Rangers 3

Consolation Game:
Binghamton Jr. Rangers 0 - Canton-Potsdam Silver Blades 5

Championship Game:
Kingston Kodiaks 3 - National Capitals 2

Clarkson's television station taped the final game and it will be
broadcast sometime after our Thanksgiving break. Thanks to all who
made
the tournament a success! It was a lot of fun, even for those of us that
were working.

Heh,
Reminds me of a story from my goaltending days. I never used it in a game
(because I couldn't) but it proved your theory well: I used to play "Summer
casual hockey" at Burnaby 4 rinks (in Burnaby BC... now called 8 rinks)
where you would pay a set fee (practically free for goalies) and play with
whomever showed up. I had a friend custom make a Hawaiian-print hockey
jersey for me that I wore during pickup games. I had wanted to form a
mens-league team and call it the "Islanders" with everyone in a different
wild tropical print sweater... but unfortunately that idea never became
reality. Anyway, 4 Rinks would give you a sticker to wrap around your
stick, much like a ski lift ticket, to prove that you paid the fee. One
time the goalie sticker was a very bright orange, so I stuck it right in
the middle of my tropical-print chest. The ice that summer Saturday was
crowded with quite a few major-junior players, and a couple of NHL'ers
(including Cliff Ronning when he was with the Blues) out for a fun skate,
and that sticker/sweater combo did more to help me than you can imagine! An
*incredible* amount of shots hit me square on the chest.

BTW I'd love to see someone take up my "Islanders" concept, especially a
women's team, since {alert: possible sexist comment follows!!!} women seem
to have a lot more fun playing hockey than us boring old men. If you do
please send me a team photo.

support women's hockey is a hellava lot more interesting than listening to
people chat about why their skates are too big for the 1000th time.

Chuck,

What a great idea! If one neon color doesn't do it, a fruit cocktail
should! Also I hadn't even really considered the goalies wearing the
jersey--if I met you in that jersey I'd be doomed.

I will bring up the Islanders concept if we get a Vegas tourney team
together...or any team for that matter! The team I'm on now went for
the bright colors idea and somehow we ended up with Avalanche
jerseys--the away jerseys work well under all the light (good blue) but
the home jerseys, like most white jerseys, are near-useless.

The goalie is not a target.
The goalie is not a target.
The goalie is not a target........

I have to ask - this is something that I've wondered for a while: When
did it become politically incorrect to refer to females under the age
of 18 or so as girls?

Why is this a "women's youth" hockey tournament rather than a "girls'"
     tournamnet?

     Jan.

Good question Jan.

It seems no matter what we call it someone beats us up over the girls vs
womens issue. It really gets annoying after a while because here we are -
two people putting together a tournament with 63 teams for girls to get
exposure to college and prep school coaches - and we have to start
worrying about calling it "girls or young womens". Believe me we have had
complaints from both sides.

Maybe someone can clarify what it should be called. I'd be happy to
change it to girls if that woud be more PC. I just don't want to take
away from the purpose of the tournament which is to allow young women to
advance their educational opportunities by having a place to showcase
their athletic talent before many college coaches at one venue.

We have had many great success stories from our organization and the
tournament. Only one player from our organization in our 11 years has not
gone on to college.

I would be inclined to call it girls because young men are called boys -
and that doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I'm sorry if it seems like I taking off on this but after the number of
hours I have been putting into it lately to make sure it runs well I just
don't need to have to worry about what to call it. Again, we are two
people doing this - not making a dime for our time - our reward is
knowing that when it's over another year was successful and a bunch of
kids got some great exposure. It's our way of giving something back.

Elmer
