Ok. I'll go ahead and give my profile...
Age: 28. I've been playing for just over a year now. I had watched
hockey for years, but was a speed skater. My husband has always played,
and after 18 years of speed-skating, I decided I needed a new sport.
This is my first year playing with women, and although the speed is
slower than the mens, the stick handling is much better (something I
really need to work on!)
Teams: Denver High Peaks (women). We're a team with all ranges of
abilities, from beginners to those who have played over 15 years. They
are a very positive group of women, and we have a great time every game,
win or lose. Also play for Nilex Rangers in a mostly mens rec league.
There are quite a few beginners on the team, but they also have a great
attitude and are just happy to be out there. Both are non-check leagues.
Equipment: Bauer 4000 skates, CCM pants (good, but I want to get a girdle
and shell), Koho gloves , brand new CCM elbow pads ( I hate the bigger
pads, but they sure help when I play the men and have to use my elbows ifor
self defense), Joffa shin guards (I think). I got them used in Canada with
all my other eqipment. I will not skimp on those! (I have been hit with
some guys slapshots at close range and still been injured), Cooper helmit
with a clear face sheild (100% improvement over my cage) Thin, Bauer
shoulder pads ( I don't like big ones at all).
Fighting: Ok. thought I'd add this to my profile. I don't like fighting,
even though I am a very physical and agressive player. The women tend to
play a very clean game, and I don't get too defensive out there when I get
hit. I also try to be clean, so I don't get into too many altercations.
However, I have gotten into a couple of fights with guys (hate to admit
that). I have found that many men at the beginner level seem to get mad
if I outskate or outplay them, and I have been cross-checked in the head,
slashed on the neck, etc. I actually had a guy start punching me in the
chest because I beat him along the boards, yelling obscenities the whole
time. Nothing infuriates me more than a man getting physically violent
with me, so I have lost my temper and started throwing punches when I get
blatent, dangerous cheap shots (I don't mind the clean checks, getting
bumped off the puck, or even tripped if on a breakaway). I play a tough,
but clean game.
Ok..didn't mean to write a disertation, but I love reading everyones
profiles to see who has had similar experiences .

Subject: Clarkson Edge Tournament
Message-ID:
Yesterday, November 24, The Clarkson Edge hosted a tournament for four
midget girls teams. The purpose of this tournament was to
introduce the girls to Clarkson (thereby earning the support of
administration), to increase awareness of women's hockey, and to let the
girls have fun.
Our local radio station promoted "Women's Hockey Weekend" which mentioned
St. Lawrence's two home games as well as our tournament.
The results of the tournament are as follows:
Game 1:
National Capitals (Ontario) 3 - Canton-Potsdam Silver Blades 0
Game 2:
Binghamton Jr. Rangers 1 - Kingston Kodiaks 5
Game 3:
Kingston Kodiaks 2 - National Capitals 2
Game 4:
Canton-Potsdam Silver Blades 3 - Binghamton Jr. Rangers 3
Consolation Game:
Binghamton Jr. Rangers 0 - Canton-Potsdam Silver Blades 5
Championship Game:
Kingston Kodiaks 3 - National Capitals 2
Clarkson's television station taped the final game and it will be
broadcast sometime after our Thanksgiving break. Thanks to all who made
the tournament a success! It was a lot of fun, even for those of us that
were working.

Message-ID:
Hi there,
I'm thinking of going to Princeton this weekend to see my sis play.
However, I don't know how to get to the arena. I will be travelling down
I-80 to Route 206. From then on I'm lost!!! I will be going straight to
the arena as I will be getting in right about the time the game starts so I
really don't want to get lost.
Thanks in advance....

Any more information about the Princeton tournament? Where is it being
played? When does it start? Is there someone who can be contacted in
Princeton for more info? We live in Philly and it would be fun to drive up
to see a game next weekend. Thanks very much.
Best,
GG

JERSEY TIPS
Something I learned long ago applies to hockey very well. Jersey colors
are strategic.
I play mostly with men and they seem to hate yellow, bright red,
certainly bright pink or fuschia. Well, frankly, I hate pink too...but
these three colors are particularly advantageous to wear. Neon green
and a lighter but bright neon blue would also probably do.
These colors work very well in attracting the eye. If you look up and
see all yellow, your first instinct is to pass to them--really! Since
you should have your head up anyway, your eyes will lead. And guess
what happens when the OTHER team looks up and sees all yellow? It has
worked for me in soccer and other sports (softball--they'll hit it right
to you every time because they can't focus as well *between* the
players). It's a sort of biopsychological thing.
So if you're choosing jerseys for your team, consider the very very
bright, even if it is a bit ugly. You'll be glad you did on the team.

Subject: skate profiling
My understanding is that these are the same thing. There is a machine
that shapes the curve of the blade so that the part of the blade that
comes into contact with the ice is in a certain place. Typically,
defensemen prefer this contact further back on the blade for skating
backwards; forwards want theirs further forward for forward skating.
I find that having my blades profiled "or rockered" every six or ten
sharpenings helps. At the pro shop where I go it doesn't cost extra,
but it takes longer. The machine used is referred to as the CAG -
it's an acronym I think.
Hope this helps!

Subject: Re[2]: Checking
Changing the game *just* because it's different from the men's version
doesn't seem reasonable. What REASON is there to change? Women's
hockey is NOT a lesser sport because it is different from men's
hockey. Regardless of the historical reasons for women's hockey
having evolved without body checking, it has, and the sport as it
exists requires skating skill, stick handling skill and finese that
most men and boys never develop.
In reply to the comment about Gretsky and women skating with their
heads down, women and girls can also decide whether to be skated off
the puck or pass it! If women skate with their heads down, they may
not be injured, but they also won't see the checker coming to take the
puck and so will still be unsuccessful in carrying the puck!
I have also seen that women can skate more physically in a game
without body checking than many men can because that's how we've
always played the game. Men don't understand playing the body when
you don't body check.
From my experience with adult hockey in the Washington DC area, this
whole discussion really only applies girls' hockey. There is very,
very little body checking allowed in any adult hockey, men's or
womens'.

For all readers:
It is my understanding that checking was removed from the Girls/Women
Section of USA Hockey due to considerations of the International Ice
Hockey Federation. My experience as a coach has shown that the first
thing female players started doing after checking was removed was to
start dropping thier heads! I personally think checking is a great
dimension of the game.
Certainly, when Wayne Gretzky was young, the big player vs. small player
issue was obvious. It was also obvious that he dominated by virtue of
the fact that he almost always had his head up and was extremely
difficult to check! I have shown a lot of video to the boys I have
coached, hoping to emphasize this point. It has always been amazing to
watch the "Great One" decide when he would or would not be checked.
Most often, he seamed to allow himself to be checked right as he dished
off an awesome pass to a team mate that almost always scored! It is
interesting how Marcel Dionne, Pavel Burre, Mario Lemieux and a bunch of
other great players could dominate with a finnesse game right smack in
the middle of what is nothing less than a great physical confrontation!
For now, I think checking is history for Girls/Women. As a coach I have
yet another challenge... I will strive to meet it...

CCM is supposed to come out with women's skates in January - you might
be able to find something that fits you better in that line. I
understand they will be high end skates, Tack 852s.

To Kate:
Reference to your narrow feet and your inability to find a narrow skate.
There are two skates available that fit women's feet better than others.
Ridell makes a skate called the Air 50 which is made specially for
women. CCM's are narrower than Bauers and you may find that these will
fit your foot better. You can get Ridell skates from most Pro Shops or
in Madison,WI we have a rink that we play roller hockey at that sells
these skates retail via catalog sales. You can call or e-mail the rink
(Fast Forward) or visit their web site on the internet. They have a
wonderful professional staff and mail order in the USA UPS shipping is
free.Web site is http://www.fast-forward.com.Their 800 number is
800-557-7655. They will send you a catalog if you call and ask for
one.Good Luck!
