Overall we were pleased with the tournament and the opportunity to see girls'/
women's hockey played at various levels. Tournament officials were friendly,
and we made several contacts which could lead to games, new opportunities for
our girls, etc.
The biggest problem we had was with the map showing the location of the Parade
Ice Garden. It directed one to take Lyndale south off I-394. Now there isn't
even a sign mentioning Lyndale as one cruises 394. Everyone from our team
(and those we know about from our opposition) had a war story to tell on
finding the rink. Calling the rink's listed number (same map) gave the
answering machine of an assistant public defender. I don't think the map was
created by the tournament officials, though.
Our motel was one of three that was indicated as having a continental
breakfast, but that was not the case. It's impossible to tell the reason
for the mis-information.
Chances are very good that we will return next year, especially since we had
mostly very close games.

Hi,
I am a brand new member, just signed on a couple of days ago. I am fairly
new to the sport of hockey and am trying to soak up all the info I can about
the sport. I don't play hockey but am an addicted fan and Hockey Mom. I
have a husband who coaches and two boys (ages 5 & 10) who play Roller Hockey
in Key West, FL and I am very involved with the running of the youth league.
So I am very interested in exchanging information on all aspects of the
game, including epuipment, training, conditioning and nutrition (for
avoiding cramps and dehydration), league management, etc....
I love all the great tips on dealing with smelly equipment and will be
trying every one of them. We play in the heat year round and are at the
rink so much that the equipment doesn't get aired out as often as I would
like. Goalie gear is the worst and the car smells like a locker room.
Our league, The Southernmost Hockey Club, is starting its 3rd year and we
are hosting our 1st youth tournament this weekend. 14 teams from South
Florida are competing. If anyone is interested I can post the results on
Monday. We are also going to try our 1st women's tournament in January.

Subject: Las Vegas Tournament and re: Safety In Numbers (A poll of list members)
Message-ID:
In case anyone is interested, there is going to be a women's tournament in
Las Vegas from February 28-March 2. It is being put on by California
Hockey Productions again. I don't have any other information because I
gave the flyer to our team organizer and forgot to write down the phone
number. For anyone who has subscribed for a while, it was listed here for
last year's tournament.
As far as the list survey, I am 43 and have been playing hockey for about 2
years now. I started to learn to skate about 4 years ago (though it hasn't
been a continuous thing). I am married (no kids), work full time and
commute about an hour each way to work. I skate once or twice a week in a
women's league that is about an hour away (depending on traffic) and try to
skate once or twice a week at another rink that isn't any closer, but is
less crowded. I also split season seats to the Kings with another person.
Equipment has been a bit of a struggle - I am quite small (5'1" and about
100 lbs.). I like my Tackla pants with suspenders (CCM Supras were too
short, and since I also play coed hockey, the Koho's I replaced them with
didn't have enough padding). I don't really care for the Jofa shin pads I
have because they are a bit wide, and they are heavier than I wanted. I
have Jofa shoulder pads that I like - they allow lots of arm movement
without riding up around your throat or being too bulky. My elbow pads are
Jofa also. They are OK, but pinch a bit. There seems to be nothing for me
between slight pinch and flopping around. I don't like my helmet - it is a
CCM and is too narrow between the ears. The next size up flopped down over
my eyes. And the padding won't stay glued into place. The Itech cage is
distracting - I used to have a Cooper helmet that came with a cage that I
never noticed and that really fit, but I couldn't find replacement parts
when I would loose something on it (like screws, etc.). I definitely
regret getting rid of it. I have junior sized Bauer 3000 Custom Supreme
skates that are very comfortable, 4 years old and still going strong.
By the way, I extended the life of my old gloves for over a month - I
discovered at a game that I had rubbed a hole in my glove. I patched it
with moleskin to finish the game, and it felt fine. I forgot about it and
played for another month before I replaced them (they were Vics, not very
expensive, and I found similar gloves for half price that fit at a store
that was going out of business).

After I play roller hockey, I just take off my stuff and lay it in the
back of my minivan and it dries out there. Once my dad was riding with
me and asked why it smelled like a wet dog in my van. :(

book "On the Edge, Women Making Hockey History" It's a wonderful book, and
I'm only half way through it! Anyone playing hockey or connected with hockey
should read it. As for me, I play on a girls team. I've been playing for
the past six years now, and I just love it! It's such a wonderful sport, and
since I live in only a small town, not many people have the same "love" for
the game as I do. I wear mostly CCM equipment, including my shoulder pads.
I find them a great pair and recommended them to anyone, their CCM SUPRA SP

Playing experience: Started playing my freshman yr. in college, and at that
time I went to every public skate I could to teach myself how to skate :)
(played highly competitive soccer for 14 years which made the transition to
ice hockey much easier... similar movement, etc.) I caught the ice hockey
fever then and now I've got the coaching fever. I've coached soccer and
sailing before but really enjoy coaching ice hockey. The kids are great
(most of the time), the parents are the biggest challenge, and I love to
bring not only hockey knowledge to them but information they can use both
on and off the ice (especially on ways to improve your performance... ie-
visualization techniques, positive thinking, mind set, and other issues
they can use in hockey, school, business or whatever.) It is a total blast
and I highly recommend more women who have the nack for teaching, and that
love the sport to get out there and start coaching. I find a lot of girls'
teams or programs just have some random person who will coach the girls
because no one else will (in some cases). To keep this sport growing we
need to start with the kids...
Anyway, enough soap-box preaching... I love the list and find it a great
source for contacts, information and fun.
PS- If any Midget teams want to come out to Seattle we'd love to have you!
And if you ever do find a final count on the number of people on the list I
would love to know. Thanks!

Not to beat this to death but...
I can understand if you don't have corporate sponsors then you might charge
a fee at the doors (as Rhonda stated), but the All American Tournament had
huge sponsors like Fresca, etc. The MN Amateur Sports Commission, who was
the governing body, seemed well funded with their glossy, 3-color
brochures, etc. I guess that is why I expected so much more... they have
been doing this for years, their presentation of the tournament was
top-notch and then when we arrived it was run by a bunch of kids who didn't
have a clue (and yes, they were very pleasant). It is a huge job (as
Rhonda said) but I just felt mislead as to the quality of the tournament.
Yes, we too were able to see the hockey from across the country, made some
contact, etc. but I can't help feeling it should have been better
organized. And so it goes... (thanks for the advice Rhonda... I will write
to the director :) and thanks for responding everyone )

i originally sent this only to zoe, but it's such a good program that i
decided to send it to everyone.
here's a good program that really helps with quickness as well as leg
strength. i got it out of _the hockey handbook_ by lloyd percival (by the
way, if you don't have this book, i highly recommend it! especially if you
are a coach. it has lots of different plays and also tips for defense,
wings, and centers. basically it's my hockey bible!)
Do these two workouts on alternate days:
1. Fartlek program: bets done on a soft (if possible a dirt road or trail
in the woods), hilly route 4 minutes- jog slowly to warm up
4 minutes- sprint 20 yds.then, walk 50 yds., repeat
7-15 minutes- jog/run 1 minute- run backwards 25 yds, forwards 25 yds.,
repeat
4 minutes- walk
1 minute- hop on left leg 25 yds, hop on right leg 25 yds., repeat 2
minutes- jog/run
30 seconds- run as fast as you can
2. mark off a length of 20 yds.
alternating feet that you start with, start from a standstill and sprint 20
yds, then jog slowly back to the start. do this 10-15 times. it is
recommended that someone claps as a signal for you to start sprinting to
improve quickness, but it's not essential.
after doing the sprints, go for a "long" jog/run to build up endurance (at
least 25 minutes or so)
this workout can be supplemented with push-ups, etc. to increase arm
strength. the fartlek program really does result in a noticable
improvement in sprinting speed on land _and_ on ice in about 2 weeks. and
it's a lot more fun than just going running. also, it places emphasis on
time, not on distance covered.
also, of course, there are always plyometrics... ugh. if you have any
questions about this program, feel free to write back!
and buy _the hockey handbook_ by lloyd percival! i used to read it on the
bus on the way to games in high school, thinking maybe i'd learn something
new on the way. :)

Hey Everyone!
I just thought I'd reply to this as well. I haven't really posted before, I
just started playing a while ago . So, my name is Lara Eichhorn. I'm 16
years old and I'm in grade 11. I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I play
for my high school girl's hockey team, the Westlane Spartans. I just
started playing about a month ago and I've been a hockey fan for about two
years now, I love it already . I bought most of my equipment used and I
wasn't really expecting to make the team but I just thought I'd try. I made
it, because my coach didn't make any cuts I guess. He has a few more
players than he wants and I guess I'll have to improve to gain more ice
time. I've played in three games so far and I think I'm getting better
already, even if it's just baby steps. I'm taking skating lessons every
week because I couldn't skate too well, much less stop, when I started
hockey. Now, I can stop most of the time and even skate backwards, though
not too fast. I love to play so much already and I'm hoping that I can get
better over time. I guess I basically have to work on my skills, skating
and stick handling. My endurance and strength is already pretty good from
cross country running. I recommend running to anyone who wants to increase
their endurance, it feels like hell at first but it definatly works!
Anyway, this is a great list and everyone has some great ideas and opinions.
I'm looking forward to reading more of them!

Personal info: Big hockey fan; love the Capitals; want desperately to
play hockey; wanna be a goalie.
My problem: This summer, a new ice rink about 45 minutes away from me
started registration for a novice hockey league that was to start in
October. I figure this was my chance to finally get into hockey. I pay
an ungodly amount of money that covers registration, uniforms, equipment,
ice time, a couple of banquets, and awards for the leading team at the
end of the season. The only thing that bothered me was that they had
not yet figured out which day they were going to set aside for
practices. Every week before the start of the season, I would call up
to the rink and ask if they had decided when to have the practice. They
finally narrowed it down to either Sunday afternoons or Thursday
evenings. I told them that I would not be able to practice on Thursdays
since I have class on that particular night. Weeks go by and they still
don't know. I get fitted for hockey gear that has to be special ordered
because I'm female (and the ONLY female that registered for the league)
and then have to get fitted a second time because they said they lost
all my sizings. A few weeks before the season is to start, they have a
'pre-season' party at Hooters. Needless to say, I did not attend. One
week before the season is about to start, my equipment still has not
arrived. A few days before the season is to start, I get a call telling
me that they decided to have all practices on Thursdays.
In order to get my money back, I had to pay a $25 'administration' fee.
That was on October 15th and I'm still waiting for it. I still want to
play, but will have to wait until next year when they start a new
season. This is like having an itch that you can't scratch.

Manon's contract was bought by the Reno team about a week ago. The West
Coast Hockey League had a game featuring Reno and the Anchorage team in
Tucson last sunday night. She wasn't there and I'm told she may not really
play with them at all. One source said she's out of shape but working out
in order to play on the Canadian National team.
I am an occasional emailer to this list. I don't play hockey, but my 12
year old daughter has been playing for over three years. Living here in
Tucson and Arizona, there are no all girls hockey teams, although I've heard
that one just started in Phoenix with girls of all ages. Unfortunately
getting information on who to call about it is like waiting for it to snow
here. My daughter plays with boys, and there are usually about 2-3 girls
per age group. My daughter is a 2nd year Peewee and is on the Travel team,
and luckily is taken seriously by her male teammates. She hopes to one day
play hockey in college any possibly play on the Women's Olympic team in a
few years.
