Subject: Safety In Numbers (A poll of list members)
Message-ID:
Hi everybody...
I just got through reading todays list mail. Because of the topics being
discussed of late, (the hooters issue & equipment stuff mainly.) it made me
wonder how many people are on this list? When we all decide to write Boston
Hockey Supply or Bauer, to ask for women's skate sizes... Are there enough
of us to scare them into taking us seriously? I'm trying to keep in mind
that not everyone has access to a computer or maybe they don't even know
about this list... I guess what I'm asking for is a list check... If you're
willing take a few minutes and check in... Whether you've never wrote in
because you just like to listen, or like myself, have a lot to say, could
everybody write in and tell a little about yourself like what kind of
equipment you use, how long have you played and at what level?... I'll even
start things out. Here goes:
It seems like I buy hockey stuff every week... I'm always trading old stuff
and upgrading to better equipment... A trip down to Play it Again Sports
almost always turns into a two hour long trip with me. I'm 26; played for a
couple of years in my early teens, (cuz my best friend at the time played...
she was very good, I wasn't.), I gave it up for almost 10 years and seriously
took up playing again at 23 on a whim. I had to stop mid season, the year
before last because I was laid off from my job...
I wasn't even thinking about playing this year until a friend invited me to a
women's postal workers Ice Hockey team practice... Then I got the FEVER!
Now I'm totally committed to playing as good as I can & as much as I can
before I get too old, that is! I use Bauer skates, (1000 Supreme Custom Flo
Lites) I still have to use a lot of ankle tape, but I'm used to it... I
traded in my KOHO pants for some new TACKLAS (They were recommended by
someone on the list along with Louisville as preferred hockey pants for
women, so I went out and tried them on...) Awesome fit! Plenty of extra
padding in the tail bone and the back of the thigh; and the length is perfect
for me... My KOHO's were too short. The only thing is the waist is a little
big but I fixed that by using suspenders which I never really needed
before... I got a really good deal on them too! ($64 bucks!) They're brand
new! They're official NHL Pants that were used as a sales reps sample! A
lucky find! I use Easton Air for gloves... For shoulder pads, I use CCM 600
Supra's; I find that even for a men's shoulder pad they protect my "HOOTERS"
nicely, (Thank you very much.) along with my lower back. I just traded some
old stuff last weekend at P.I.A.S., (Namely my smelly old elbow pads my too
short KOHO pants and an old pair of gloves...) for some NEW elbow pads...
KOHO Pro- feel whatchamacallit brand, (I forget the correct name..) They
we're regularly priced at $49 but with my smelly trade ins (which I was glad
to get rid of!!) I only paid slightly over 20 bucks! Maybe next weekend I'll
look for some deals on new shin pads. I'm pretty attached to the ones I have
though, (in spite of the fact that they too are getting quite smelly!)
Never mind that.
There; I'm done. Now... so I don't feel TOO stupid, can everyone else write
in a little something just so we can get an idea of our numbers out there
listening.
Thanks for your time!
Good Hockey to ya!

Being a goalie, I'm ALWAYS interested in talking goalie
stuff. I don't know if that would be boring to the rest of
the readership, so maybe we can e-mail directly, or else
someone who has a lot more computer knowledge than I can
set up another chat line. I used to play in your neck of
the woods, too, with Canton (senior A's) of the South Shore Women's Hockey League,
before moving back to Alaska, and currently play mens and
women's hockey. I am a stand-up goalie, and very much
like the technical and mental aspects of the position.
So, feel free to e-mail me directly if you so desire!

Hi Lisa!
I just got on line with the rest of you about two days ago...
I have been playing for four years now, this year I got too old (20) to play
in the local amatuer league, so I went away to school and now I'm playing on
a men's team. I werar ccm tack 552 skates, the first pair of skates I've
found that actually fit, I had three pair of Bauers before these... My shin
pads are Bauer Flak adjustable (Which I don't recommend to ANY ONE out
there, I hate them!) I wear a cooper girdle and a shell because I haven't
found a pair of pants that I actually like, and a pair of bauer flak air
armour shoulder pads, which are men's, but covered in so much plastic I feel
they offer the best protection. My elbow pads are ferlands, and in dire need
of replacing, so if anyone has any recommendations of new ones, let me know!

Did someone say goalie? I swear I heard that. :) I am a goalie in
upstate new york, actually, I guess it's called northern new york,
playing on the Clarkson women's hockey team the Edge and on the
Potsdam/Canton Silver Blades. I've been playing for several years and
was thrilled to learn that Clarkson has a women's team because it's the
only school I applied to (good thing I got in :) ) I consider myself a
butterfly goalie, but I've been told by another person that I "seem to
be more of a stand up goalie" so I guess I tend to go both ways. I'm
always interested in technique suggestions and discussion. Right now I'm
looking to buy a new stick glove, and if anyone could share their
positive/negative experiences with what they have, that would be great.
Right now all I can really do is go by what seems to fit well and seems
to be made well by what I see at the store. Any comments?

I bought Bauer Comps last year because they were the widest I could get.
I ordered a 6EE and I love them. They were also cheaper because they are
a junior size. I took a suggestion I got from this list and tried them
without socks for the first time on Sunday. I love them even more now. I
also have a pair of Bauer 2000 Supremes which I picked up at a
Play-it-again in Portland, OR and had converted to in-lines. Those are
incredibly comfortable too (as long as I tape the inside of my right heel
to avoid a monster blister).

First to reply to this bit of info:

I just wanted to say that a couple of years ago, I was at a Minn. tournament
and a 70 year old (or 77, I can't remember) was playing against us and she
was pretty good. Just to give ya'll some hope. =) I guess she had been
playing since she was a kid. Anyways, I thought it was really cool.
Well, my name's Jen, I'm 21 and I've been playing for the Women's Hockey
Club at the University of Illinois for 2 1/2 years. I picked it up when I
was a Soph. in college because I rollerbladed alot and people kept telling
me that I should join the team. I started on the "C" team and after alot of
learning, "graduated" to the "B" team. Well, I caught the "fever" too and
I'm finding myself organizing my future around hockey.
We don't have try-outs because we have two teams - a "B" and "C"
team. Our "C" team is a little less experienced so we kinda call them a
developmental team. We practice during the same ice-time and scrimmage with
each other. We only have one ice arena here in Champaign-Urbana so ice time
is precious. We practice twice a week and I would consider us a fairly
organized sport club. We sell candy, wash cars and work at our football
games to earn money. We are also trying to ask for money from local
businesses but I'm not sure how that's going.
As for my equipment, I just upgraded because my old equipment wasn't
giving me enough protection. I have Bauer Comps, (now that I skate
barefoot, I love them) Jofa shoulder pads, KoHo pants, Jofa elbow pads,
Cooper shinguards, and a Cooper helmet. My gloves are crappy so I'm looking
to upgrade them too. I'm just waiting for Christmas. =)
This weekend, our "C" team is going to Mich. to play a couple of
games and I know they're excited. I'm sure it'll be a fun weekend for them.
The "B" team is also heading North but to Wis. They're having a big
tournament with some neighboring teams (relatively speaking). We're really
looking forward to this also. It should be a fun weekend for everyone, full
of hockey!

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my message. (And the rest of you that
have also replied. Those of you that haven't, please do!)
One bit of advise I can offer when purchasing elbow pads is to bring your
shoulder pads when you go to try them on... Some elbow pads will interfere
with your shoulder pads depending on how thick they are or how far up the
bicep they go... This could inhibit your movement, which wouldn't be good...
I really like the ones I just bought... (KoHo profeel, I can't remember the
model number but I'll find out for ya...) They're hinged at the elbow for
extra freedom in movement range, and best of all, they don't pinch! (I had
scratches and little bruises just from trying on some other brands!!)
Another brand I liked was Jofa but they interfered with my shoulder pads
thus, helping me decide on the KoHo's...
We'll I hope you find what you need! Good luck!

You might be surprised to find out how many different people are on the
list. You could ask the 'List Mom', and I'm sure Chuq Von Rospach would
be happy to tell you.
Good luck,

Yea goalies! I always knew there were sisters in pads
out there! I use a Vaughan B2000 blocker (and have for
many years) because my hand (like most women's) is small,
but I play against A caliber men. The B2000 is the only
blocker I have tried that the fingertips aren't an inch or
more longer than my fingers, and the quality as well as
protectiveness is superb. It is extremely light weight,
too, and the forefinger padding is seperate from the
fingers of the rest of the hand, which means your fingers
aren't exposed like if the padding was all one big pad.
'Hope that helps you out!
