The following is a report on the tournament.
Deerfield Academy Invitational Round Robin
Deerfield, MA
December 20 & 21, 1996
Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, MA, was host to five of the best New England Preparatory
Schools' Girls' Hockey teams this past weekend for the second Annual Deerfield Invitational
Round Robin Tournament. The two days saw ten excellent games between the five schools
represented. The tournament also saw great young players performing their best in front of as
many as 200 spectators. In the stands along with parents, friends and teachers were coaches
from every College in the Ivy League, and the ECAC Division 1 schools as well as many
coaches from the colleges who play in the ECAC Alliance.
Only two of the ten games were decided by more than 3 goals, with most having the outcome in
doubt halfway through the third period. The overall winner, with four victories, was the team from
Kimball-Union Academy(Meriden, NH) led by Nadine Muzerall and Julie Forsyth of Mississauga,
Ont., Heather Cook of Roseveltown, NY and featuring Meagan Huchinson of Windsor, NS in
goal.
In second place, with the one loss to KUA, was the host team from Deerfield Academy. The Big
Green were led by Caroline Trudeau and Michelle Labbe of Pointe Claire, PQ, Lauren Steblen of
Clayton, NY, Jamie Hagerman of South Hamilton, MA and anchored by the outstanding
goaltending of freshman Amy Quinlan formerly of Amherst, MA now relocated to Morris Plains,
NJ.
The third place school was Choate Rosemary Hall(Wallingford, CT). The Wild Boars scored a
tournament high 5 goals on KUA but still lost by one. They were led by Junior National team
member and Connecticut Polar Bear Angela Ruggerio of Simi Valley, CA. Her team-mates
included Nicole Kirnan of Dewitt, NY, Jaci Kryzak of Altamont, NY, Suzy Gibbons of New
Canaan, CT, Kalen Ingram, and exchange student from Peterborough, Ont, Catherine Elkins and
sister Victoria, of Bernardsville, NJ, in Goal.
In an impressive effort the eight skaters of Cushing Academy(Ashburnham, MA), while only
winning one game, kept the score close in all their games. They lost to KUA and DA by only one
goal in games which saw end to end action on the second day. They were anchored by Val Bono
of Woburn, MA on defense and Colleen Coen of Billerica, MA, Jill Marks of Winthrop, MA, Emily
Hudak of Marblehead, MA and Christine Butt of Pembroke, MA led their relentless attack. The
goaltending was shared by Audra DeLuca of Billerica and Danielle Bradley of Woburn. The
Penguins were without their high scoring Junior forward, Jane Jorge of Alston, MA, who was out
with a soccer season broken leg. She should be back on the ice in the middle of January.
The puck did not bounce the right way this weekend for perennial ISL Champs Lawrence
Academy(Groton, MA). They were in the game right to the end with potent KUA, eventually
falling 5-2. The games with Cushing and Deerfield saw many posts and were in doubt even in the
third period. The score in the Choate game is not indicative of the level of play. Everything went
right for the victors and for Shari Bryska of Whitby, Ont. it was one of those days. She made
many excellent saves but the puck kept trickling in. Lawrence was led by Kim Greene of Everett,
MA, Andrea Cutts of Woburn, MA, Danielle Culgin of Framingham, MA, Laura Cataldo of
Littleton, MA, Michelle McAteer from Scarborough, Ont. and Jessica Knapp of Boulder, CO.
This young team will be a force to be reckoned with in the ISL this year and, by the end of
February, will benefit much from this tournament.

Well, they're a little slow, but I know of at least two manufacturers who
are starting to make a women's line of gear. Canada Pro Athletics/SGRO has
a line of women's pants, and I believe they plan on expanding, and Louisville
has a complete line, due out about now. Kelly Dyer is a spokesperson for
them.
I think the fact that female hockey enrollment is on the rise and I believe
male hockey is staying relatively flat....

I use it to tape the cords of my Christmas candles down to the
windowsills each year!

I wanted to add one more that might come in handy this time of year.....
A friend of mine used her boyfriends entire supply of hockey tape to tape wicks
on
the Christmas candles she was making for gifts. She said it was better than
anything else she had tried. Of course, he had a hard time understanding this
when
he opened his bag before a game, and found it completely devoid of tape!

WOW!!! They really are getting a womens line of gear out???? Thats great!!!! I'm
glad they are finally reallizing that women are really getting into hockey more
and more every day. I'm kind of new to playing womens hockey so I guess I am an
example of how more and more women are getting into what used to be a "mans"
sport. Thanks for the info!!!!

I am interested in playing hockey in college. I am in 11th grade and we
have just started a girl's club team in my area. I dont know of many
colleges that have girl's hockey programs. I am also intersested if there
are any scholorships that are given out to girls to play. This is the
beginning of my search. So any information would be appreciated. Thanks!
