Slapshots are not allowed at the squirt level in either boys or
girls games. Girls squirts play by the same USA Hockey rules as the boys,
even though the ages differ.
BTW --> The definition of a slapshot came up when I pointed out what I
thought was an infraction to a referee recently. His interpretation of a
slapshot is "a shot in which the backswing of the stick comes above the
knee." Hmm...OK sounds resonable to me. We have a couple of defensemen
who can get off a pretty nasty shot using only a knee level backswing.
Should I tell them to go ahead and use it? Do you think all refs use this
interpretation? What if they only hear the craaack!! and catch a glance at
the follow through? Anyone else run into this before?

Rule 617 of USA Hockey allows the shot as long as the backswing doesn't go
higher than the waist. I'd say your defensemen could go ahead and use it.
Have your rulebook marked with the page, and keep it handy.
I don't think the official should disallow the shot by virtue of hearing
the crack.

The USA Hockey online rulebook states the following in Rule 617. It looks to
me like this allows (Squirt - Girl's only) to go ahead and take full windup slapshots.
Otherwise, why would they specifically dissallow it for Boy's only.
Am I missing something here? In any case, it looks like it is OK to bring the stick up
to the waist on the backswing.

Rule 617 (in part)
"(Note) The use of the ``slap shot'' in the 10-and-Under (Squirt - Boy's only) age
classification and below is prohibited. A face-off shall take place at one of the end
zone face-off spots adjacent to the goal of the offending player's team who, in the
process of making a forehand shot or pass, raises the blade of his stick above his
waist in the backswing of such shot or pass. "

It is interesting to read these messages regarding slapshots. As far as
I know, there is no rule governing slapshots under the CHA official rule
book (Canadian Hockey Association), either for female or male minor
hockey. I do know that in the younger age groups it is discouraged by
coaches. Some coaches see it as a waste of time to develop such a shot
at a young age, and that it is preferable to concentrate on the wrist
shot. My two daughters play competitive girls hockey; one is Peewee and
one is Bantam, and on both teams there are players who use the slapshot
during tournament competition. It has never been called as a penalty.
By the way, we are hosting a tournament in Sudbury Ontario on February
14th to 16th. If you want to use that 'slapshot', take a trip north. We
will be offering divisions in Novice Houseleague, Atom houseleague,
Peewee B, Peewee A, Bantam BB, Midget A and Senior AA. Come experience
our Northern Hospitality.

OK! OK! Like I said, this probably needs some clarification. Coaches
and ref's need to keep in mind that many Girls Squirt teams have players
that are nine or ten years old! I have never won an argument with a
ref during a game. In most of the games and tourney's I have coached
in, Squirt Divisions further restrict raising the stick to a maximum of
knee height.
As some of you may know, there is a good chance that there will be no
classification of Girls as Midget, PeeWee, or Squirt. They will instead
be classified by age only. The move is afoot for many reasons. This
happens to be one of them. Although many Squirt age girls are the same
age as boys on PeeWee teams, it can be a real bear trying to get them
the same privileges and recognition. A part of all this is the constant
questions that Coaches and Administrators field from Squirt Girls all
the time (Why does my eleven year old brother get to play for a
National Championship, yet I'm twelve and don't?). While this is
clearly discriminatory, I feel it is inadvertent. Hopefully the rule
change will pass, and some of this garbage can be laid to rest!

Slapshots are allowed in Womens/Girls hockey at the peewee and
above classifications in the US. The interesting question is, given the
USA Hockey rule (617), what is the interpretation for slapshots by squirt
girls (ages 12 and under)?
BTW --> I'm in complete agreement with you that the slapshot should
not be the focus of attention by developing players. However, I think it
can be a useful weapon by point position players if they can get it on net
with any consistency.

I've asked the question for almost four years now, here in Minnesota? Why
doesn't our local paper post Division I scores like they do for the men. We
know all of the scores for all of the Division I teams for the men. The editor
of our paper still thinks UNH, Providence, Dartmouth, etc. have club teams.
Lynn Olson who is or was head of Minnesota Womens Hockey called him and set the
record straight. Now they say they don't get the scores for the Women over the
AP like they do for the men. Who would forward those scores? There must be
someone who could get the scores forwarded over the AP. We really appreciate
Blackthorne for his efforts, but it would be nice to look inthe paper and see
the results especially if you have someone playing out East.

Slapshots ARE allowed for girls squirts.
This was the topic of a "discussion" I had with a couple of refs at a
girls tournament I was at last weekend.
The refs told the girls on my team that they could not take slapshots. I
called the ref over and told him girls squirts could. He, in no uncertain
terms, told me USA Hockey rules specifically did not allow them. I always
carry my rule book and had it available (actually some of my team got to
it before me as they know its in my first aid box) - after the game the
refs agreed with me after reading the rule.
Chuck correctly states the rule. It is for Squirt Boys Only. The squirt
girls age group actually includes PeeWee boys aged players.
As a matter of fact, I am calling the refs that are handling our Holiday
Tournament just to be sure they know about this rule.
