Jan--
The goalies on my team all have expressed interest in this list-- they
are not on the women-in-hockey list but i forwarded your message to
them. I thought I'd send you their e-mail addresses in case you decided
not to post the address to the list or in case i missed it.

When I played on a boys bantam team my dad wanted me to not only
hide my hair, but be announced as "Andy" instead of Anna so that the
other team didn't know I was a girl. I was targeted for that reason.
During the season I was hit so hard, they were called boarding, hitting
from behind and charging. The guys on my team couldn't believe I kept
getting back up and they even went after the guys that hit me.
This is just my experience though.

People!!! Don't hide your (or your Daughter's) pony tails!!! Wear them
with pride! The last thing we want is to have Girls/Women needing to
come out of the closet later! I just finished watching and coaching in
our Annual Turkey Shootout Tourny. I watched kids of both genders get
no playing time, fair playing time, and too much playing time! The best
example was the highly talented girl on a boys midget team pound my male
forwards relentlessly!!! I need to add that she has a great coach that
skates and develops all of his players equally! After all, she is a
member of a recreational association.

Hiding the ponytail won't fool the player's coach! Most of the ice time
problems girls experience on a boys team, are due to a lack of integrity
on the part of the coach. I am relieved that it is not mostly an
animosity towards girls, as they often leave their lower skilled boys on
the bench too!

As for girls on boys teams, ask your daughters coach to let you look at
the USA Hockey Annual Guide. New this year is the stipulation that a
girl may participate on both a boys and a girls team, that is eligable
to compete on the pathways to National Championships. She must however
declare in writing, by December 31st, which team she will play with in
the post season. While it has been accepted practice in the past, it
was never clearly stated in the guide. As a result, in some areas of
the US this was a bitter bone of contention.

Hopefully girls all over the country will take advantage, as it doubles
thier exposure to skill developement. A point of concern should be the
physical ability of the player to give and take hard checks. Some girls
will not be capable, at the Midget and Bantam levels of boys hockey, of
avoiding knee and shoulder injuries (I MUST add that there are boys in
the same boat). Those players should stick with one team (hmmm...
interesting that there does not seem to be a lot of non-checking leagues
for 95 pound boys facing the same problems! Girls clearly hold the
advantage here). The reward could be a scholarship that might not be
available to a player with a history of knee and shoulder injuries.

In order to advance the skill level of female players, USA Hockey has
made many allowances for girls that they won't make for boys. As such a
girl may register with a boys team in a boys age group, recreational or
competitive. A boy may not do the same. In fact, a boy may not ever
register on more than one team eligable for National Championships.

These allowances, in most cases were hard fought issues. There are
still many problems concerning girls registration, and participation
that need resolution. Hiding the ponytails won't help!

Thx, Lyle

i've experienced this on the *adult*
level, and i don't HAVE a ponytail.

there are those of the male persuasion
who feel that it is "wrong" for women
to play ice hockey, period. they take
every opportunity to physically "punish"
those women who do play.

one can conduct lengthy philosophical,
logical and persuasive arguments with
this type for HOURS and get nowhere.
one can even point out that at no point
in *any* rule book does it explicitly
say that one must possess exterior plumbing
in order to play ice hockey.

ultimately what it takes is getting tough
back. once you drive it through their skull...
usually with the assist of a well-timed
blocker or stick...that you're prepared to
defend yourself against their attacks,
they will generally grant you some degree
of respect, however grudgingly.

while this works well for goalies (you
can deliver quite a bit of "accidental"
retaliation to players crashing the net
when you're a goalie), D and forwards might
want to adopt the Russian method of playing,
which is to simply deke, skate, and turn
so quickly and gracefully that the idiot
trying to pound you pounds himself against
the boards instead...or loses the puck.

I agree, but with an exception. The only time to hide the ponytail
is during tryouts. My daughter Amy insists that next year she'll be
leaving her trademark pink hockey tape home and trying out as "Andy".

Locally, we know a girl who worked like a madwoman (madperson? madgirl?)
in the off-season, and was rewarded in July with a slot on a AA team. Then,
for various reasons, the AA team folded. She tried out at 3 different clubs,
and in all but one that required an extra 80-minute commute, she was placed
on B teams. During one such tryout, a coach initiated a conversation with her
father about how impressive his son's skating was and that he looked
forward to having him on his (A) team. When the father replied, "You mean my
daughter?" the guy reacted like he had just told the coach that he had
active Ebola (Ah choo!). When the positions were posted, there she was on
the B roster.

You know, I read this list and the youth-hockey list regularly. Especially
on the youth-hockey list, I see postings by coaches that regularly denigrate
"unbalanced" parents who "overract" and make their lives miserable, and that
the parents don't understand that it's "only a game". As a parent, there
are few things that can spark an irrational reaction more than seeing your
child get treated unfairly or with malice, and be totally without options to
try and make it right.

Lyle, there is also a C Level in USA Senior Women's Hockey... (At least
there is in our league, the S. S. W. H. L., of Massachusetts...)
Also, I hear that more levels will be added to the Women's Senior League for
next year... It's just a rumor that's flyin' around, (Yes I'm gossiping) but
I hope it's more than just a rumor... I think everyone would have more fun
if things were matched up a little bit better... (ie. not losing every game
and getting bumped up or down a level because of crowded rosters...)
