USA Women win three over Team Sweden

Team USA Women swept a three-game series with the Swedish Women's Ice
Hockey Team this past weekend (7-1, 4-1, 2-1). Coach Ben Smith used a
number of different players and line combinations as the USA gear up
for the Women's World Championship in April 1997. Assisting Smith were
Harvard Women's coach Katey Stone, and Kelly Dyer, former Northeastern
goalie who is still in the player pool. Next up for the USA will be the
Three Nations Tourney in Ottawa with Team Canada and Team Finland Women
(Oct. 20-26, 1996). Over the December holidays there will be a camp
followed by a trip to China in January 1997 for an exhibition series.
Canada, USA, Finland and China are the main contenders for the gold
medal at Kitchener '97. In mid-February the USA Women will have a two
week camp at Lake Placid as the final cuts are made for WWC '97.

MIT organizing AWCHA Club Championship

The MIT Women's Ice Hockey Club team is organizing the 1997 AWCHA
Women's National Collegiate Club Championship. The tournament is
tentatively scheduled to take place at Johnson Rink at MIT (Cambridge,
Mass) the weekend of March 6-9, 1997. The championship will have A and
B division to accommodate differing levels of play. Some schools will
be sending teams in both divisions which indicates the increasing level
of participation in the women's college game.

Smith named Olympic team coach

On June 3, USA Hockey announced Ben Smith of Gloucester, Mass., as
coach of the United States Olympic women's ice hockey team. Women's
hockey debuts as a medal sport at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in
Nagano, Japan. Several of the team members are expected to be current
or past collegiate players. Smith, who for the past five seasons served
as coach of the Northeastern men's hockey team, has resigned that
position and agreed to a three-year appointment with USA Hockey. "The
efforts that USA Hockey has made truly signify a new beginning for the
women's program, and to be a part of the building process is a great
honor," said Smith. "Having previously coached in an Olympic setting, I
know what a feeling of exhilaration and adrenaline that representing
your country provides." Smith's varied international coaching
experience is lengthy, dating back to 1985. Last fall, he was coach of
the USA Hockey Women's National Camp at Lake Placid, N.Y., and guided
the 1995 U.S. Women's Select Team to a four-game sweep of the Finnish
Women's National Team.
