I have heard that three of the women's teams are without coaches at this time. I
know the athletic director at WLU is still trying to find a coach for the
upcoming season. She has asked that I would post this information to the list.
If you are interested in coaching the Wilfrid Laurier University Women's Team,
call the university at 519.884.1970 and ask for Cookie Leach, the women's
athletic director. I also have seen an advertisement in our local newspaper from
the University of Guelph looking for a coach. York University is also with out a
coach for their women's team as far as I know at this time.
Does anyone know if these positions are being filled?
Also, the rumour is that there will be a national tournament for women's hockey.
Is this event a CIAU sanctioned events or just an invitational tournament? Does
it imply that CIAU rules are going to apply to women's hockey? (Sorry Andria,
Cammi, Laura and all, this may mean an end to illustrious university careers.
Not only spanning countries but decades.)
Congratulations to the Toronto Roller Hockey Teams for making it to the
championship game in Chicago. I ran into two of the returning players this
morning of the championship team. I also asked about the last roller hockey
championship that was won. They were upset with the entire team being implicated
for poor judgement because of the actions of one of the players.
The Canadian National Team will be playing in October and it apparently will
hold a preliminary camp. The rumour is that 33 players have been invited. Is
there anyone who can enlighten the few of us on the outside who have an interest
in these mattes?
On the outside looking in,

Here are the results of the women's division at the 1996 North American
Roller Hockey Championship that was held near Chicago this past weekend
(Aug 23-25, 1996). The Toronto Tornados defeated the Toronto Tigers by
a score of 6-0 in the gold medal game. In the bronze medal game, it
was the Femme Fatale over the Black Widows in overtime by a score of 1-0.
All in all, it was a fun, very well-organized tournament. I had
fun meeting a few people at the tournament who are also on the
women-in-hockey mailing list!! :-)
The increased interest in the women's division was nice to see.
Soon they'll have to have qualifiers as is the case for the men's
divisions! There were 16 women's teams that took part in the
championship. The competition seemed even tougher than last year.
Here is a summary of all games played in the women's division (the
numerical columns are for p=points, ga=goals against, and gf=goals for):

I just wanted to make it clear that there was only one woman on the
Tornado team who was drinking between the semifinal and the final game.
It's unfortunate that the coaches let her play, as clearly, this type
of behaviour in sports shows a lack of sportsmanship and respect ...
not to mention the inevitable increased risk of injury. My apologies
for the behaviour of this player.

In an effort to not "beat a dead horse" I too apologize. I had not
intended for the posting to sound as if the whole team had not been on
their best behavior. Congrats to those not involved for a great tournament
at the National tournament and Congrats for the win in Chicago. I wish I'd
been there to see the two Toronto teams in action. It is always fun to
watch a well executed game.
Thanks Andria for bringing this to my attention.

I just noticed that I had two of the "totals gf" values listed incorrectly
in my previous post. Sorry, I hope it didn't cause any confusion. The
"totals gf" column has been corrected, as follows:
game 1 game 2 game 3 totals Division Overall
p ga gf p ga gf p ga gf pt ga gf Rank +/-
Chicks with Sticks 0 4 0 0 3 0 2 0 2 2 7 2 3 -5
Bladerun Tremors 2 0 4 2 1 3 0 2 1 4 3 8 2 +5
Fast Forward 0 3 0 0 3 1 0 2 0 0 8 1 4 -7
Femme Fatale 2 0 3 2 0 3 2 1 2 6 1 8 1 +7
