Hey there!  Just wanted to thank everyone for giving me info on women's
teams in the NYC area! :)  I'll be sure to check them out as soon as I get
my equipment out of Michigan!  If anyone has the number for any of the
contact persons for any of the teams (i.e. the Brooklyn Blades) please send

     USA hockey has a girls:
     
     Squirt division which is for girls 12 and under
     PeeWee division which is for girls 15 and under
     Midget division which is for girls 19 and under
     
     After 19 they are considered Senior players.
     
     and your observations are correct, there is no Bantam level.
     
     There have been girls at the age of 6 or 7 playing girls squirts.  A lot of 
     the player makeup of a team depends on the caliber of that team and the 
     numbers of girls they have to draw from.  A newly established team where 
     nearly all the girls are just learning the sport can easily accommodate the 
     much younger player without posing a safety risk to them.  Also remember 
     body checking is not a part of the girls game so strength and size is not 
     as great an issue as it is with the boys.
     
     Hope this helped to clear up some of those foggy areas.
