As the latest chapter in our infamous plan to take over sports
programming here on the Internet, I'd like to welcome a new mailing
list to the plaidworks fold:

        email@hidden

the new home for the fans of the NHL's Dallas Stars. Laurie will be
head List Mom for the new list. If you're interested in the list, send
mail to email@hidden and give it a message of "info
dallas-stars". Please help us welcome them aboard and make them feel
welcome.

And while I have you all here in the same room (gads, we're gonna have
to get a bigger auditorium if we want to keep having these meetings
together), a few other notes of general interest:

First, I want to apologize for some of the net-turbulence that happened
while we were bringing up plaidworks and moving all the lists off of
the Apple machines. Our Internet Service Provider was shifting around
their network connections to speed things up, and there were a few
burps during the process. On top of that, it turns out there was a
problem in their DNS naming programming that caused some parts of the
network to not be able to talk to plaidworks for about ten days (it
turns out, in fact, that it was the entire ISP's network that was
offline to these folks, but we were the first people to both notice and
track it back to its source for them). That caused some of you to go
dark for a while, and then get a huge burst of mail here and there
until we got that problem fixed. Everything should be fine now.
Unfortunately, the Internet is a big place and things don't always
quite work right. On the positive side, I think we had fewer problems
than I expected, and we seem to be behind them now.

Second, I'm looking for a few good volunteers. There are only so many
hours in the day, and as I keep proving, I don't have enough of them.
I'm therefore looking for a few people who are willing to take over as
Webmaster and FTP librarian for some of the mailing lists here on
plaidworks. The pay isn't great (an account here on plaidworks, the
ability to shape the minds of future users of the mailing list with
your inspired web programming and archiving abilities), but there are
things that need to be done that simply aren't happening because I've
found it necessary to sleep once a week or so. If you already have
worked with WWW and HTML, are interested in taking responsibility for
making the Web pages for a mailing list the best stuff in the universe
for the other users, and are willing to agree not to sneak in pirate
software or kiddie porn when we're not looking, please send me email
and tell me which lists you want to volunteer for. Mike Lamar will be
taking over as WebMaster for the Sharks lists, so that's taken, but I'd
like to find people to help out with some of the other lists.

Third (and finally), Another reason we've set up plaidworks is as a
home for things that don't easily fit on the Apple hardware we used to
use -- like, say, WWW consulting. One thing we know we need to do this
kind of job right are a couple of good graphics designers to partner
with. We're specifically going to be trying to focus on sports-oriented
projects (our freelance time is limited, we might as well do what we
LIKE, no?), but you never know what'll pop up. We want to find a couple
of people with similar interests and styles so that when opportunity
arises, we don't have to scramble for resources. If you're someone
who's interested in maybe talking about this, who's already familiar
with Macintoshes, who uses Photoshop/Illustrator/Freehand and does
on-line graphics work, drop us a line. At the LEAST, we'll give off
some WWW space on plaidworks that'll allow you to show off your talents
(and we'd really like to sit down and turn plaidworks into a kick-ass
Internet site: Cool Site of the Month or bust!); perhaps it'll lead to
some freelance work. Maybe not, but at least we can have a good time
doing it.

Again, thanks for your patience during the transition. Hopefully, it'll
be smooth(er) sailing from here on in.
