This is just a quick bit of advanced notice that Laurie and I are
going off on our long-awaited (and definitely earned) Summer Vacation.
Now, in theory, we have everything set so that it'll operate just fine
in our absence. In practice, you know and I know that real-life isn't
always as simple.

Now, we have housesitters who will watching over things and making sure
nobody wanders in and borrows the computers while we're gone. They're
not List Moms, though, and aren't even particularly computerish. We
also have arranged for a couple of people to keep an eye on the server
and net connection and ping the sitters to reboot things if they wedge.

It IS possible (probably likely) that there will be some downtime while
we're gone. We've done what we can to minimize that, but it's possible
that (barring catastrophic failure of a machine, of course), we could
be offline for 24 hours or so. Please be patient. It'll come back up
sooner or later. Nobody is here babysitting things to the degree Laurie
and I do.

Laurie and I will be intermittently on-line. We'll actually be in
places without phone lines, if you can believe that. When we DO have
civilization handy, we'll log in to check for emergencies and skim our
email, but don't expect us to do anything other than the bare minimum
of List Mom stuff until we get home.

If there's something that absolutely, positively needs to be done
before we go, you better let us know before WEDNESDAY. After that
point, your lack of planning will NOT constitute an emergency on our
part.

Anyone who acts like an idiot, jerk or any other pejorative while we're
off-line, will, of course, get to deal with the consequences when we
get back.

For those that care, we're doing a fairly standard trip this year: some
time on the Oregon Coast, then Westercon in Portland (where I'll be
doing some speaking), a few days in Victoria, and time up in Port
Ludlow watching the Bald Eagles fishing off of the Sound. We'll be
road-tripping, as usual, catching old favorite haunts in Tacoma and
Everett, checking out the new baseball team in Portland, and seeing how
the revamped Miles Field in Medford looks, since we haven't been there
since they started the stadium work.

And for those of you on the list who think I post far too much, well,
enjoy the silence. You've earned it, too.

I've just finished a major rewrite of the Introductory and HELP
material for the mailings on the server. The way I had it set up each
INTRO document had a large amount of common material, plus references
to all of the other mailing lists on the machine. For obvious reasons,
as plaidworks has grown, this has gotten more and more unwieldy and
it's been harder to actually FIND things in the documents.

Because of this, I've gone in and split everything up. There is now a
single document describing everything that's on plaidworks. You can
access it by emailing to "email@hidden", and I'll be
auto-posting it to the lists twice a month.

I've also set up a new mail alias for people who need help with
listproc. If you send email to "email@hidden", it'll
send back the listproc instructions and tutorial. This should make life
easier for those of you who don't keep the instructions handy (or
refuse to read instructions; well, it won't help THOSE, but they have
even fewer excuses).

Most of the common boilerplate material has been coalesced into another
new document, which is available from "email@hidden". This is
the rules, etiquette and good-manners hints that were common to all of
the lists. This will also be automatically posted twice a month.

Some of the documents also had FAQ sections in them. Those have been
split out into new documents. When I get back from vacation, they'll be
set up for easier access, but for now, you can get them via FTP.

The end result was that ALL of the intro docs were cut by at least
half, and it should be a lot easier to find
information/help/advice/pointers/whatever in this new form.

The INTRO doc will continue to be posted on the 1st and 15th. The
manners doc will be posted on the 10th and 25th, and the "what's
available" on the 5th and 20th. That helps spread out info bulge that
was coming out, and maybe a few more people who don't read the
documentation will (and so they won't ask stupid questions that were
already answered in the documentation. Hint: here's how to make List
Mom REALLY cranky. Respond to one of my auto-posted documents, asking
me a question that's answered in the document that you're responding
to. guess how many times THAT happened in the last month? grr. You
know, I don't do all this writing for the hell of it. it's to try to
get questions answered before you have to ask them. Meet me half-way,
folks....)

To get us in sync, (and to debug my scripts before vacation), I'll be
posting these things out of schedule the first time. The "manners" doc
will go out tonight. The "what's here" doc will go out on the 20th as
usual, and the INTRO docs will go out on the 22nd. After that', they'll
go out on their normal schedule.

I WISH I could say that I've found a way to only send out one copy to
each subscriber, instead of one copy to each address on each list.
That's not technologically possible, so you're stuck iwth one copy per
list subscribed. Sorry about that -- I tried, but listproc won't let me
get away with it.

I'm positive I left raw edges on these documents. If you run into
typos, glitches, mistakes, or whatever, please let me know, so I can go
in and fix them.

Thanks.
