Heather,
We haven't had that example crop up yet here in Minnesota. Although
boys high school hockey in Minnesota has a very high level of
caliber; especially in the Twin Cities area where the enrollment is
so high and the high school teams are AA level. Out-state there have
been girls - mostly goalies - in boys high school teams (but no girls
teams to compete on). There was one girl from Roseville who skated
out (wing) on the boys high school- AA - Junior Varsity team, but
this year as a senior she is playing on the newly formed girls high
school team (they are ranked #1 in the state and I predict they will
win it).
Should the subject come up - I believe Title IX provides that the
girls CAN play on the boys team - even if there is a girls team to
skate on - and I believe the reason is because the boys level of
play is higher and that if she is skilled enough to make the cut she
deserves to play at that high level of competition. I can see if
coming down the pike though - what a challenge it will be!
As far as college? We've only had one girl - goalie - play on the
men's college level and there were no women's varsity teams. Minn.
now has one team (Augsburg) with U of MN following in 2 years.
(YEAH!!!)
Hope this answers. I'm no expert - just things I've run across and
heard!

Does anyone know the list of players invited to the Team USA camp in Lake
Placid between Christmas and New Year's? Has a team been selected from
that camp yet?

Subject: Playing on a boys' or girls' team...

In reference to this past week discussion on whether girls should choose to=
=
play on a boys' team or a girls' team...here are my thoughts:
I strongly believe that any player, male or female, should choose a team =
for the COACH, not for the gender of the team or the gender of the coach. =
All youth ice hockey players should be looking for the best possible person=
=
for coaching individual skills, game strategy and strong TEAMWORK. I =
stress teamwork because it can take the most time and be the most difficult=
=
thing for kids to learn. I believe it is extremely essential for their =
future growth both on and off the ice. =
As women's ice hockey becomes more and more popular there tends to be more =
and more terrific men and women coaching it. However, in some youth =
programs people tend to think that the coaches for the boys' teams tend to =
be better than the girls' teams. I believe this to be untrue in most =
cases. Don't disregard people who coach the girls teams especially the =
women coaches. I know this to be true here in Seattle as well as =
(specifically) in Minnesota. There are increasing numbers of women who are=
=
more knowledgeable in the sport than most boy's coaches or parent coaches. =
=
They are in your community...you just have to dig them up and get them =
involved. Is it you?
I believe the trick to becoming the best ice hockey player you can be is =
to practice as much as you can AND to find the best coach for your skill =
level. And this doesn't mean the best former ice hockey player...it means =
the best TEACHER of the sport....male or female...and to play on their =
team, whether that may be a boy's team or a girl's team.
