Subject: Different perspective on starting girls' teams
Message-ID:

I have a different perspective on starting girls' teams than Louise
did. We have found a good formula here in Minn. which I will share
with everyone.

Because almost all "boys" associations (as they would wish them to
stay!) are non-profit organizations - in other words they are tax
exempt and because of this they cannot be discriminatory to girls and
girls' teams. Also, a lot of associations have money generating
means with pull-tabs, etc. - gambling $ - which is run through the
State in which they operate and again, because of this they cannot be
discriminatory to girls.

Also, ALL USA Hockey affiliate associations sign an agreement with
USA Hockey that says they cannot discriminate.

Now, there are 3 reasons why they ABSOLUTELY CANNOT discriminate
against girls playing hockey. #1 they would lose their tax exempt,
non-profit status, #2 they would probably lose their gambling $$ (if
most states are the same as Minn. that is) and #3 USA Hockey will not
let them discriminate. (See me for your local USA Hockey District
Director if you do not know who it is).

This, of course won't work with women's teams because most
associations are youth associations.

Also, the reason we have so many high school teams in Minn. now (52
this year) is because of the Federal Ruling called Title IX. ALL
schools have to comply with Title IX. Basically, the Minnesota State
High School League came up with rules they consider to be fair in
providing for Title IX in the State of MN - and one of them they
considered was "if a school has an ice sport for boys, they have to
provide an ice sport for girls." Whether it be Ringette (which is
how we actually got in-roads into this - thank you, Ringette!) or
Hockey - they have to provide it! All the girls have to show is a
demonstrated interest!

If anyone has another perspective or questions or comments about
mine- I welcome them! Dorene
