Subject: Team Canada announced for Pacific Rim Tournament
Message-ID: <95email@hidden>

Here is a list of the players who will compete for Canada at the
Pacific Rim Tournament which will be held in San Jose, California
from April 1-8, 1995. The 4 countries participating in the
tournament are Canada, USA, Japan, and China.

Unlike the World Championships, there were no tryouts camps to pick
the players which will represent Canada at the Pacific Rim. Most of
the players who were picked are younger players who I think Team Canada
feels are potential candidates for the 1998 Winter Olympic team. Seven
members of Team Canada who competed at the 1994 World Championships are
on the roster. I have indicated each of these players with an asterix (*).

Team Canada Roster:

      Goal Danielle Dube (Vancouver, British Columbia)
                * Lesley Reddon (Mississauga, Ontario)

      Defense * Cassie Campbell (Brampton, Ontario)
                * Judy Diduck (Edmonton, Alberta)
                  Rebecca Fahey (Sackville, New Brunswick)
                  Cindy Francoeur (Quebec)
                  Chantal Leclair (Quebec)
                  Fiona Smith (Alberta)

      Forward     Bobbi Auger (Alberta)
                  Martine Berube (Quebec)
                  Nancy Deschamps (Montreal, Quebec)
                * Nancy Drolet (Drummondville, Quebec)
                  Lori Dupuis (Williamstown, Ontario)
                * Marianne Grnak (North York, Ontario)
                  Mel Haz (Alberta)
                  Luce Letendre (Quebec)
                  Anne Rodrigue (Quebec)
                  Laura Schuler (Scarborough, Ontario)
                * Hayley Wickenheiser (Calgary, Alberta)
                * Stacy Wilson (Moncton, New Brunswick)

   Head Coach - Shannon Miller (Calgary, Alberta) (assistant coach 92/94)
   Assistants - Julie Healy, Danielle Sauvaugeau (both from Montreal, Quebec)

Speaking as a member of that gender, besides being apologetic and
embarassed for my half of the human race, let me say a couple of things.

First, the people who do this kind of stuff's minds are clearly pretty
closed (and probably dense), so replying isn't going to be productive,
unless it makes you feel better. These guys don't want a dialog any more
than the construction workers whistling at women on the street want one.

In reality, IMHO, these guys are either pure meatheads, or simply very
insecure about their own self. Any "manhood" that can be protected by
putting down random women for their achievements isn't exactly a manhood I
feel is worth protecting. And basically, that's what they're doing --
trying to make themselves feel better/bigger/stronger/macho by trying to
take another successful person down a notch.

At some level, it's a form of gunslinger syndrome, but more realistically,
it's simply another bully trying to prove something to himself or his
friends. Note, of course, bullies never pick on someone their own size --
it's always someone they see as less physically able to protect themselves.
After all, if it were a fair fight, they might lose.

And frankly, losers they are. That's why, in general, when they come
slinging at me (as a fairly visible net-denizen of long tenure, I get my
OWN set of gunslingers looking to put a notch on their modems), I generally
try to ignore them. I don't like to waste time responding, because I rarely
have time to waste on idiots and it serves no useful purpose, and it's not
worth escalating, because every so often you'll find that one clinical
loonie who can make your life really miserable.

The construction workers on the scaffold is a good analogy here: simply
hope their intersection in your life is short and unpleasaant, and get it
over with as quickly as you can. Confrontation won't change their attitude
or solve the problem, but it COULD create other, worse problems. So move
on. While it might feel better to "give them the finger", all that does is
reinforce their behavior. These guys get off on the feedback. They like
getting rises out of people. Silence is the way to piss them off, and make
them go elsewhere for their jollies.

I even think it's simpler than that: it's a disrepect for women in general,
and belittling women's accomplishments in general. Women, you know,
shouldn't be playing big studly man-games. They should stay home and have
babies, like God intended.

(pheah).
